The Nourish Nantucket network comprises nearly 20 food programs and partners that collectively operate the island’s food programs, forming the core of the food security system. Addressing food insecurity on Nantucket requires a multifaceted, collaborative approach.

Nantucket Food Pantry

The Nantucket Food Pantry, a program through Nantucket Food Fuel & Rental Assistance (NFFRA), serves hundreds of clients on a weekly basis. The Food Pantry provides pantry staples, fresh produce, and prepared meals on a year-round basis.

Meals on Wheels & Senior Dining

Meals on Wheels of Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands (ESCCI) delivers meals to residents aged 60 and older. Delivered Monday through Friday, the program offers a nutritionally balanced meal to clients who would otherwise be unable to prepare meals for themselves

Direct Support to island schools to help meet student food needs during the school year

CSA shares, salad boxes, farm truck distribution, and farm vouchers sourced from local farms.

Food Pantry Meals

Organized through NFFRA and St. Paul’s Church, a team of volunteers prepares homemade, nutritious meals for pick up at the Food Pantry. Each hot meal is portioned for a family of two and is available to any client when picking up groceries. This program is especially helpful for people who do not have access to a kitchen.

Ready-to-eat meals for students during the summer gap when school meals are unavailable

Feed Nantucket

The Feed Nantucket initiative launches, collecting leftover vacation groceries to reduce waste and support local families. The program is the first step in establishing a food rescue program on island.

Pip Send It Box Program

Pip & Anchor, a local market, assembles a weekly box packed with fresh, locally sourced produce for families in need. Clients have the option of pick up or delivery. Currently, the program feeds 80 families with more than 100 families on the waitlist.

The Warming Place

The Warming Place provides daytime and overnight shelter and warm, nutritious meals for those experiencing homelessness. From November 1 – April 30, they provide shelter and offer support services seven days per week. They serve lunch year round on Mondays from 12 – 1 PM at the Summer Street Church.

Nantucket Family Resource Center

The Nantucket Family Resource Center provides free family support services, guidance, and referral services to individuals, children and families. Working with a number of community partners, they provide invaluable knowledge to educate and improve family wellbeing. FRC provides walk-in access to the Food First platform.

Grocery Cards & Prepared Meals

Nourish Nantucket distributes Stop & Shop grocery cards to households previously enrolled in the Fresh Connect program or waitlist. New clients are accepted as space allows. Each person in a household receives $50 per month for up to 6 months. The cards help to offset the cost of grocery and household items

Nourish Nantucket, in partnership with Nantucket Catering Company, provides free, nutritious meals for pick up on Tuesdays. There are no qualifying factors to obtain a meal. Request a meal each week by texting 508-825-6833 by noon on Fridays. Menus change weekly and seasonally.

 

Health Imperatives/Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)

Health Imperatives is a nonprofit organization that administers several health services on Nantucket, including the federal nutrition program Women Infants and Children (WIC). WIC provides free healthy foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to pregnant women, postpartum women, children under 5 and infants who qualify.

WIC Breastfeeding Support

Another component of WIC, mothers receive personalized breastfeeding support from qualified staff. Acting as mentors, staff provide a safe, comforting space for mothers to ask questions. 
Staff also provide access to birth-related resources.

Sustainable Nantucket Grow Boxes

Sustainable Nantucket has created individual home gardening kits pre-planted with the help of Nantucket Public School students. Delivered to homes around the island, the boxes allow families direct access to freshly grown produce and a unique opportunity to cultivate their own herbs and vegetables.

Venison, shellfish, and local fish are distributed through partner channels.

Our House

Our House is an after-school program offered Monday-Friday to Nantucket High School students. They serve a family-style dinner 3 nights per week to all participants. Created as a safe space, Our House helps students fulfill their potential through mentorship and relationship building with their peers.

SNAP/HIP

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a federal nutrition program that provides residents with a monthly disbursement to purchase food at grocery stores, farmer’s markets, and CSA farm shares (where accepted). The program also provides free nutrition education and resources.

Nantucket Boys & Girls Club

Nantucket Boys & Girls Club

Nourish Nantucket partners with local and regional farms to procure fresh, seasonal produce. The Nourish Nantucket team (and volunteers) load the fresh boxes of produce and set up a “farm truck” at the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club. Club families can shop for free from our NN Farm Truck on select Fridays throughout the year.
